Mary Ann Forge (Furnace)

Published in:

Sometimes erroneously called "Mary Ann Furnace" this was a forge that processed iron produced at nearby Hanover Furnace. Benjamin Jones built the forge in the early 1830's, which continued in operation until late in the Civil War. The forge produced bar iron, and wagon axles and tires.

Today there is nothing to be seen except a few scattered bricks and what may be cellar holes. A bridge that once crossed the Mount Misery Brook is now gone, leaving only pilings to betray it's location. Around the town site there is evidence that the Mount Misery Brook was at one point deepened, perhaps to allow barges to bring pig iron to the forge site.
